Gifted

Gifted Program

The goal of the Allen County Educational Service Center’s Gifted Department is to coordinate programs, services, and offer Information to address the needs of gifted learners.

The state of Ohio defines gifted as: " ‘Gifted’ means students who perform or show potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience or environment and who are identified under division (A), (B), (C), or (D) of section 3324.03 of the Revised Code.”

Students can be identified in one or more of the following areas:
  • Superior Cognitive
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Reading, writing or a combination of these skills
  • Social studies
  • Visual and performing arts

The term “gifted” is a singular word attempting to capture a wide-range of characteristics and issues filled with complexity.  The resources listed on this webpage are provided to bring clarity and help to various audiences.

Every child is precious, but not every child is gifted using the state and national definitions.

“What do we gain by telling our most able learners that they are ‘excellent’ on the basis of a standard that requires modest efforts, calls for no intellectual risk, necessitates no persistence, and demands that they develop few academic coping skills?”
